Albert Banal-Estañol is Associate Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Affiliated Professor of the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). He is also Visiting Professor of the College of Europe in Brugge/Bruges (Belgium) and Research Fellow at IESE Business School and DIW Berlin.
Professor Banal-Estañol is deputy director of BSE's MSc in Economics of Energy, Climate Change, and Sustainability, director of the MSc in Finance and Banking at UPF-BSM, and former director of the MSc in Competition and Regulation at City University of London. Previously, he held teaching and research positions at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, IFP-Energies Nouvelles in France, Northwestern University in the United States, the University of Cambridge and London Business School in the United Kingdom, and the University of Mannheim in Germany.
Banal-Estañol's research interests are in the fields of corporate finance, competition policy and market regulation, energy and the environment and innovation and entrepreneurship. His research areas span across Economics, Management and Finance and his work makes use of theoretical, empirical, experimental and simulation techniques. His articles have been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals and have been financially supported by public and private sector grants.
He has also provided consultant advice to merging companies and competition authorities (e.g. Office of Fair Trading) and delivered executive training courses for government agencies (e.g. UKs Department of Trade and Industry), regulators (e.g. Ofgem) and private companies (e.g. Gaz de France). In addition, he has collaborated in the development of master and training programs in several African countries.
