Jaume Ventura delivers BSE Opening Lecture 2024-25

BSE Opening Lecture 2024-25

Professor Jaume Ventura gave the students in the Class of 2025 an overview of his research on European Trade and Politics

The Barcelona School of Economics celebrated the official start of the 2024-25 academic year on September 30 at Bellaterra Campus (UAB) with an Opening Lecture by Professor Jaume Ventura (CREI, UPF, and BSE) on European Trade and Politics.

This was the second of two events that welcomed the new cohort of BSE Master's students to both campuses where BSE courses are conducted. The first event, held at Ciutadella Campus (UPF), included orientation activities and course registration. During the event at the Bellaterra Campus, BSE Director Teresa Garcia-Mila welcomed the students, and BSE Deputy Director, Ada Ferrer-i-Carbonell, wished the new students a successful year ahead during their Master’s. This was followed with the Opening Lecture by Professor Ventura as well as an exhibition of "castells" or human towers, a Catalan tradition that reflects the spirit of collaboration students find during their year at BSE.

Opening Lecture: "European Trade and Politics"

In his lecture, Prof. Ventura discussed how globalization affects political structure. He used examples from his research surrounding this topic, which have been published in the Journal of the European Economic Association. Prof. Ventura also discussed the effects of borders on international trade as published on the BSE Fcous in the article Do country borders impede regional trade flows within Europe?

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Ventura answered questions from the students about the subject.
