Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi (or Saint George's Day) is a holiday in many parts of the world. In Barcelona and all around Catalonia, the streets are full of small stands selling books and roses, which people exchange with their loved ones.

The newspaper Expansión asked 50 directors and thought leaders from organizations in Barcelona for their Sant Jordi literary recommendations. Among those asked were four members of the BSE community. Here are the books they recommended:

Teresa Garcia-Milà, director of the BSE

  • A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara
  • All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr
  • Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari
  • The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914, by Margaret MacMillan

José García-Montalvo (UPF and BSE)

  • Straight Man, by Richard Russo
  • Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley, by Antonio García Martínez
  • The Gene: An Intimate History, by Siddhartha Mukherjee
  • Think Fast, Think Slow, by Daniel Kahneman

Jordi Gual (President of CaixaBank and BSE board member) and Pau Relat (President of FemCat, a BSE board member institution), also shared their Sant Jordi picks.

Other newspapers also asked for book recommendations from members of the BSE academic community. For example, Guillem López-Casasnovas (UPF and BSE) suggested Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann when asked by the newspaper El Punt Avui.

Happy Sant Jordi reading to all!
