Board Appoints Prof. Massimo Motta Dean of the BSE
As GSE Chairman Andreu Mas-Colell assumes the duties of Secretary General of the European Research Council, the School’s Board has appointed Prof. Massimo Motta as Dean of the BSE, beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.
Prof. Mas-Colell has being Acting Dean of the GSE during the past two years, and now Dean Motta will be taking over this responsibility. More specifically, Dean Motta will deal with the academic issues of the School – master programs, professional executive education, and summer school – working with the Director-General, Eduard Vallory.
“The appointment of a Dean represents a new step in the GSE’s development,” Dr. Vallory said, “and we are excited to have Massimo Motta on our team.”
Dean Motta, who will chair the Academic Program Council, will work together with the master program directors and with the GSE team to continue improving the academic offer of the School and its professional focus, as well as steering the evolution of the GSE programs within the framework of the European Higher Education Area.
After leaving his current position as Professor of Economics at the Università di Bologna, Massimo Motta will join the BSE community as ICREA Professor of the UPF and Research Professor of the GSE. He was already Professor at the UPF, where in the early 1990s he promoted the MSc in Economics (now part of the GSE), as well as the GPEFM PhD program. More recently he has also been designer and Scientific Director of the MSc in Competition and Market Regulation of the GSE, in close cooperation with companies and regulatory institutions.
Chairman Mas-Colell remarked that the combination of these different perspectives made Prof. Motta an ideal choice for the position.
“Massimo Motta brings with him his excellent scientific track record, his successful leadership of graduate education initiatives, his knowledge of the professional needs of companies and institutions, and a clear European scope,” Chairman Mas-Colell said. “His work as a Dean will help the School to maintain its standards of academic excellence while improving the professional focus of its graduate programs and executive education,” he added.
Prof. Massimo Motta is a Fellow of the European Economic Association (EEA), and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and at CESifo (Munich). He was previously Professor and Head of the Economics Department at the European University Institute (Florence), a distinguished cross-academic higher education institution supported by the European Commission through the European Union budget.
