BSE Board appoints 5 new Scientific Council members
These prominent academics will provide valuable insights and guidance to BSE’s strategic decisions.
The Barcelona School of Economics is pleased to welcome five new members to our Scientific Council. As prominent figures in academia, they will provide valuable insights and guidance to BSE’s strategic decisions.
The new BSE Scientific Council members are:
- Pol Antràs (Harvard University)
- Oriana Bandiera (London School of Economics)
- Marianne Bertrand (University of Chicago Booth Business School)
- Penny Goldberg (Yale University)
- Lucrezia Reichlin (London Business School)
The Scientific Council is a longstanding group of international experts, including nine Nobel Laureates, who help to amplify the reputation and strengthen relationships between BSE and the academic community.
Further to this, Scientific Council members also participate in roundtables, lectures, and other events organized by BSE, which provides our students, alumni, faculty, and community with valuable knowledge and opportunities to learn.
The council meets periodically in Barcelona to discuss current educational offerings, research initiatives, and possibilities for institutional development.
About the Scientific Council members

- Pol Antràs (Harvard University)
- Pol Antràs is Robert G. Ory Professor of Economics at Harvard University, where he has taught since 2003. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), where he served as director of the International Trade and Organization (ITO) Working Group. He is also Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and is a member of CESifo's Research Network. Since 2015 Antràs has served as Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, having previously been on the editorial board the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of International Economics, and the Annual Review of Economics, among other journals. Among other distinctions, he was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 2007 and the Fundación Banco Herrero Prize in 2009, and he was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2015.

Oriana Bandiera is an Italian economist and academic, specializing in development economics. She has been a Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics since 2009. She is currently the Sir Anthony Atkinson Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, and co-editor of Econometrica. Her area of study primarily concerns organizations and labor markets, and their relationship with the process of economic development. Bandiera was born in Catania, Sicily, Italy. She studied economics at Bocconi University in Milan, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1993 and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in 1994. She then undertook postgraduate studies in economics at Boston College in the United States: she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2000.
- Marianne Bertrand (University of Chicago Booth Business School)

Marianne Bertrand is the Chris P. Dialynas Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She is a Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economic Policy Research, and the Institute for the Study of Labor. Marianne Bertrand is an applied micro-economist whose research covers the fields of labor economics, corporate finance, political economy and development economics. Her research in these areas has been published widely, including numerous research articles in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Political Economy, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of Finance. Marianne Bertrand is the Faculty Director of Chicago Booth’s Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation and the Pritzker Director of the Inclusive Economy Lab at the University of Chicago Urban Labs. She also served as co-editor of the American Economic Review.

Pinelopi (Penny) Koujianou Goldberg is the Elihu Professor of Economics and an Affiliate of the Economic Growth Center at Yale University. From November 2018 to March 2020, she was the Chief Economist of the World Bank Group. Goldberg was President of the Econometric Society in 2021 and has previously served as Vice-President of the American Economic Association. From 2011-2017 she was Editor-in-Chief of the American Economic Review. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a recipient of Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and Sloan Research Fellowships, and a recipient of the Bodossaki Prize in Social Sciences. She is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research (NBER), Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and board member of the Bureau of Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). Goldberg is an applied microeconomist drawn to policy-relevant questions in trade and development.

Lucrezia Reichlin is a Professor of Economics at the London Business School, Chair of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), Trustee of the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation (IFRS) for which she is chairing the task force on sustainability reporting standards and Trustee of the Center for Policy Research (CEPR). She is a co-founder of Now-Casting Economics ltd and non-executive director of Ageas Insurance Group. She is a columnist for the Italian national daily Il Corriere della Sera and a regular contributor of Project Syndicate. Reichlin received a Ph.D. in economics from New York University. She has held a number of different academic and non-academic positions. From 2005 to 2008 she was the Director General of Research at the European Central Bank. From 2009 – April 2018 she was non-executive director of UniCredit Banking Group and from 2013-2016 she was Chair of the Scientific Council at the Brussels-based think-tank Bruegel. Reichlin has been an active contributor to the life of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) over the years and she is now an honorary fellow.
