More than 75 masters graduates attend first meeting for BSE alumni community in Barcelona

news

During the meeting at Boo Beach Club, alumni selected two representatives from among their peers to facilitate collaboration between alumni and the School.

The first official event for BSE alumni living in and around Barcelona took place in January 2016 at Boo Beach Club on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Around 80 alumni attended the event, including graduates of all cohorts since the School’s inaugural Class of 2008.

After welcoming remarks by BSE Director Teresa Garcia-Milà and the Career Services team, alumni had the opportunity to hear from personal branding expert Mari Carmen Martin. Personal branding is just one of the topics that the Career Services team is available to help alumni improve as they advance their careers in the professional or academic world.

Reflections on business and personal growth

The evening featured speeches by two alumni who illustrate the diversity of career choices in the alumni community. Mario Schäfer ’10 (Economics of Science and Innovation) is Managing Director at Prevtec Microbia GmbH, a biotechnology company. Mario spoke about business financing and seed capital.

The second speaker was Benjamin Anderson ’15 (Economics of Public Policy). Ben began working as a research assistant after graduation last summer, and will now return to the United States to work as a Data Strategist for Made in Durham, a non-profit organization focused on improving career opportunities for young people in that city. He spoke to fellow alumni about growing and learning outside the office.

First regional alumni representatives chosen

During the meeting, Thomas Woiczyk (Economics ‘14, GPEFM) and Isaac Ré Delgado ’15 (Finance) were confirmed as alumni representatives for the Barcelona area. They will act as liaisons between BSE staff and local alumni. With over 200 graduates living in and around the city, Barcelona is home to the largest community of BSE alumni anywhere in the world. Many of them work for consulting firms, think tanks, and research institutions, while others are enrolled in PhD programs, including GPEFM and IDEA within the BSE research community.
