Course overview

This intensive five-day course offers a comprehensive overview of the private equity (PE) industry, focusing on the practical aspects of deal structuring, leveraged buyouts (LBOs), financial engineering, recapitalizations, distressed investing, and strategic exits. Designed for students with a solid background in corporate finance, the course equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the full lifecycle of private equity transactions.

Each morning, participants will attend a series of lectures and case discussions that delve into critical topics. In the afternoons, students will engage in practical exercises and Excel-based case work, applying their knowledge to build financial models and analyze real-world PE transactions. These interactive sessions are designed to foster hands-on learning in LBO valuation and modeling and leveraged recapitalization strategies.

By the end of the course, participants will gain a robust understanding of private equity’s operational and financial strategies, allowing them to critically evaluate investment opportunities and execute complex PE deals from acquisition to exit.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the full lifecycle of private equity investments, from acquisition to exit, including key processes such as leveraged buyouts (LBOs), recapitalizations, and distressed investing

  • Build and analyze private equity deal structures through Excel-based financial modeling, gaining practical, hands-on experience in evaluating transactions

  • Apply theoretical concepts to real-world business scenarios by examining landmark cases such as TXU’s LBO and Hertz’s IPO, enhancing the ability to interpret and assess complex PE situations

  • Integrate academic and industry perspectives by learning from expert faculty who bring advanced insights from both private equity practice and corporate finance research

Requirements

Summer School applicants normally demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • A strong background in Economics or a field closely related to the course topic (Statistics, Law, etc.)
  • Postgraduate degree or current Master’s/PhD studies related to the course topic
  • Relevant professional experience

Requirements for Private Equity, Deal Structuring, Recapitalizations, and Exit Strategies

  • Participants must have a strong background in corporate finance
  • Participants must have a good understanding of accounting
