Royal Economic Society Prize awarded to Giacomo De Giorgi
The Royal Economic Society and the Economic Journal have selected Giacomo De Giorgi (ICREA-MOVE, UAB and BSE) and co-author Michele Pellizzari (University of Geneva) to receive the 2015 Royal Economic Society Prize for their paper, "Understanding Social Interactions: Evidence from the Classroom."
The RES Prize is awarded annually to the author(s) of the best non-solicited paper published in the Economic Journal. A committee consisting of the RES President, a representative of The Economic Journal Editorial Board and one member of the Society Council, selects the winner.
Too close collaboration between students reduces overall performance
University students who go to many of the same classes will help each other when one of them is off sick or otherwise distracted from their studies. But knowing that this ‘mutual insurance’ is in place leads to average performance declining as everybody in the group makes less effort. These are among the findings of the study by De Giorgi and Pellizzari based on their study of the behavior of economics and management students at Bocconi University in Milan.

Professor De Giorgi is the second consecutive recipient of the RES Prize from the BSE research community. Last year, the prize was awarded to Prof. Pau Olivella (UAB and BSE) for his paper with co-author Marcos Vera Hernández (University College London) on "Testing for Asymmetric Information in Private Health Insurance."
About Giacomo De Giorgi
Giacomo De Giorgi (PhD, University College London, 2007) is ICREA Researcher at MOVE, Professor at UAB, and BSE Research Professor. He is currently on leave at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. His research interests include Development, Labor Economics, Applied Econometrics, Consumption Smoothing, Insurance Networks, and Social Interactions. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association.
