faculty

BSE Affiliated Professor Marta Reynal-Querol (ICREA-UPF and GSE) has been named the tenth recipient of the prestigious Banco Herrero Prize. The prize is awarded once a year and recognizes a researcher under 40 years old who has outstanding research accomplishments in the fields of Economics and the social sciences.

Cutting-edge, innovative research

The prize selection committee was chaired by Dr. Josep Oliu, President of Banco Herrero (part of the Banc Sabadell group). According to a press release announcing the committee's decision, Prof. Reynal stood out for her "cutting-edge, innovative research" on economics, ethnic diversity, and civil strife, "which has been published in the most relevant economic journals and has received a high number of citations."

Prof. Reynal-Querol's most recent research examines the importance of personal and psychological characteristics of leaders in the results of companies and countries, an aspect that had not been considered in prior research on the subject. Her methodology and findings paint a more complete macroeconomic picture and a new perspective on the probability of the appearance of conflicts.

First female economist joins a list of distinguished prize winners

Prof. Reynal-Querol is the first woman selected to receive the Banco Herrero Prize, whose past winners include Prof. Xavier Sala-i-Martin (Columbia University and BSE guest professor), IESE Prof. José Manuel Campa (who spoke at the GSE's opening ceremony this year), and Prof. Pol Antràs (Harvard University and BSE board member).

The Banco Herrero Prize will be officially awarded to Prof. Reynal-Querol in a ceremony that will take place in early October 2011 in Barcelona.
