The professional course Competition in Digital Markets celebrated its first edition with 62 professionals including lawyers, economists, policy makers, and managers working on Competition Policy and Regulation who came to get the latest expertise from leaders in the field:

  • Giulio Federico (Head of Unit, CET, DG Competition European Commission)
  • Chiara Fumagalli (Associate Professor of Economics, Bocconi University)
  • Massimo Motta (Professor of Economics, ICREA-UPF and BSE; former Chief Competition Economist, European Commission) - course director
  • Martin Peitz (Professor of Economics, University of Mannheim)

The instructors shared the most recent economic theories and showed participants how to apply these concepts in practice and how to review actual cases in light of those theories. Participants gave very positive evaluations of the instructors. Some participants had already received training from them over the years on different platforms. They appreciated the variety of perspectives and styles that the instructors brought to the course.

Godknows Giya has been working as an economist in the Competition Commission South Africa since 2013. Since this is one of the markets that he has worked on the least, this equips him technically to make the right decisions on cases on digital markets: “The course was very helpful particularly on theories of harm, thought and the practical decisions on Digital Markets cases reviewed particularly in the EU,” he said.

The course was also helpful for BSE Master’s alum Arvydas Vidziunas '11 (Competition and Market Regulation), a senior analyst who took the course “to learn more about how to apply the standard competition law approaches to digital markets.” He now intends to host a workshop for his colleagues. Many alumni return to take BSE professional courses to keep updated in their fields.

Šarūnas Pajarskas, a senior adviser in the Competition Council of the Republic of Lithuania, considered the course “as a very good forum to learn about current trends in competition economics” and would also recommend not only this course but others by BSE as well to whoever is interested in modern competition economics, because “it is an up-to-date program both in terms of background theory and practical applications and case law.”

Olga Bohorquez Suarez, an economist working at La Poste, took the course because her job involves defending the interest of her company in cases of abuse of dominance position. She highlighted the applied cases combined with the theory and would recommend the course to other people, because “the topic is really interesting and the professors know their subjects very well, either from an academic or a more practical point of view.”

Diego Otero, the Deputy Director in CNMC, thinks that “digital markets are more and more relevant in a context of increasing digitalization of the economy,'' so he would recommend this course because “in just a few days you can get a complete view of the main issues involved in competition for digital markets and the EU regulations applicable.”
