Jordi Galí Ranked Most Productive Spanish Researcher from 1990-2004
Jordi Galí, Director of CREI and BSE Affiliated Professor, tops the list of most productive Spanish researchers from 1990-2004, according a study included in “Publishing Performance of Spanish Academics: 1970-2004” by D. Rodriguez (Spanish Economic Review, 2006).
The study used the criterion of the UC3 methodology, which is based on the number of pages published by the researcher adjusted by the square root of the number of authors and weighted by the publication in which it appears.
In addition, Professor Galí is co-author of the most cited research paper published since 2005 in the Review of Economic Studies, according to Google Scholar rankings. His paper, coauthored with T. Monacelli in 2005, is titled “Monetary Policy and Exchange Rate Volatility in a Small Open Economy”, and has been cited 173 times from July 2005 to present.
Professor Galí has been a Professor of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra since 2001 and Director of the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI) since 1999. CREI, one of the founding academic institutions of the BSE, was created to promote research in the highest standards of academic scholarship. Though the diverse research projects span many areas within international economics and macroeconomics, all contribute to a better understanding of the economic forces that shape modern societies.
Previously, Professor Galí was Professor at New York University and at the Business School of Columbia University, and visiting professor at Yale and MIT. He is also Fellow of the Econometric Society and member of the Council of the European Economic Association. Outside of academia, he holds Research positions at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), in London, and at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Beginning in the fall of 2007, Professor Galí will be teaching in the UPF-GSE MSc in Economics.

Professor Galí’s research centers on the areas of international and macroeconomics, particularly topics such as business cycles, inflation, exchange rates and the conduct of monetary policy. His influential findings have contributed to a better understanding of the interdependence of European economics and monetary policy conduct by central banks. These advances have established him as a leading scholar of macroeconomics and brought him many accolades, including the Yrjo Jahnsson Award in Economics (2005) and the Premi Rei Jaume I d’Economia of the Valencian Government (2004).
Currently, Professor Galí is working on a project with Olivier Blanchard (MIT) that explores the large difference in the impact of the oil price hikes in the 70s (when they triggered a major recession and high inflation worldwide) vs. the present decade (when the effects are barely detectable, despite the fact that the increase in the price of oil was of a similar magnitude). The project will evaluate the merits of different possible explanations: (i) oil is less important for the economy these days, (ii) monetary policy is more credible and has improved the tradeoffs facing policymakers, (iii) labor markets are more flexible.
The Center for Research in International Economics (CREI) is jointly sponsored by the Catalan Government and Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), and draws many of its researchers from the UPF Department of Economics and Business. Both CREI and UPF are founding academic institutions of the BSE.
