International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) 20th anniversary conference
On June 11, 2011 the International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) held a conference celebrating its 20th anniversary at the Bellaterra campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The IDEA program is one of two reference doctoral programs of the Barcelona School of Economics.
Among the conference participants were many BSE Affiliated Professors who teach in the IDEA program and students who entered the IDEA program after completing the master program at BSE. In total, some 75 IDEA alumni, 40 current students, 33 faculty and 27 external academics attended the conference.
The conference program included sessions on political economics, growth, finance, social choice, innovation, game theory, macroeconomics, and other research topics that have put IDEA on the international map as a top-ranked doctoral program.
In addition to the IDEA 20th anniversary conference, on June 9-10 more than 80 academics from around the globe gathered at the UAB to celebrate the lifetime achievements of one of IDEA’s most distinguished faculty members, Prof. Salvador Barberà (UAB and BSE Research Professor). Together with BBVA Foundation, the UAB held the conference Votes and Incentives: The Design of Institutions, a tribute in honor of Prof. Barberà’s 65th birthday and his contributions to Social Choice Theory.
About the International Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA)
Launched in 1991 by the Unit of Economic Analysis of the UAB, IDEA was the first postgraduate program in Southern Europe drawing on the Anglo-Saxon tradition of two years coursework, with a supervised master thesis and a further two or three years devoted to a PhD thesis. Since its inception, the program has awarded over 130 PhD degrees to students from more than 30 countries including Austria, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Norway, Philippines, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.
IDEA graduates have gone on pursue academic careers at top universities and research institutes as well as central banks, international organizations, and consulting firms.
