Global Alumni Meeting 2019
On September 27-28, Barcelona School of Economics celebrated the Global Alumni Meeting 2019, a reunion with alumni from around the world, faculty, and staff. It was a great opportunity for our alumni to renew their connections with the BSE community, to do some networking, and to enjoy the social events BSE had prepared.
This was the third official reunion in Barcelona for graduates of all Master’s programs and cohorts since the BSE’s first class of 2008. With a community that is 85% international, organizing such events can be a challenge, but as they did for alumni meetings in 2013 and 2017, there was an excellent turnout for this year’s event with 115 alumni participating from 20 countries.
For this year’s meeting, alumni were asked to make a donation to the new Alumni & Friends Merit Award fund. This scholarship initiative launched in early 2019 and aims to provide a full scholarship for a future Master’s student, who will of course one day be a fellow member of the BSE Alumni community. Registrations for this event raised 2715€ for the first edition of the Merit Award, which will be given for study in the 2020-21 academic year.

Reuniting with old friends
The meeting kicked off on Friday 27 with a pre-reunion get-together at Espacio 88 organized by the Barcelona Alumni Chapter. Some of the alumni hadn't seen each other for years and came to the Alumni Meeting from the United States, Australia, Canada, Egypt or India.
Sports, academics and networking
The next day started with outdoor sporting activities in the morning. Two dozen alumni signed up for CrossFit, which took place on the beach. Other chose to participate in a yoga session in Jardí de les Aigües, a place very familiar to many of them from their days as students at Ciutadella Campus.
In the afternoon, there was the official welcome by the director of Barcelona School of Economics, Teresa Garcia-Milà, and staff. Then, there was an Academic conference with our panel of faculty and alumni on "Diversity in Economics". The panelists were:
Professors
- Rosa Ferrer (UPF and BSE)
- José García-Montalvo (UPF and BSE)
- Joan Llull (UAB and BSE), moderator.
Alumni
- Analía Belén García '19 (ITFD), Research Assistant at Banc Sabadell
- Marta Morazzoni '18 (Economics), PhD Student at UPF-BSE
After this conference and open discussion, alumni could participate in an interactive workshop organized by BSE Career Services. The session was based on the crowdsourcing model so alumni could generate ideas, share and learn some news from various sectors, discuss current challenges, predictions for the future and much more. Alumni continued connecting in the networking cocktail, where current students were also invited to attend and start getting to know their alumni network.
Celebrating our community
The Global Alumni Meeting finished that night with a cocktail dinner and a beach party at Club Natació Barcelona with an amazing view of the sea. Special guest DJ Nils Handler '18 (ITFD) kept everyone dancing far into the night.
The BSE Alumni community includes over 2,000 graduates of the Master’s programs in Economics and Finance, Specialized Economic Analysis, and Data Science.
While many alumni have stayed or returned to Barcelona for work or to pursue doctoral study, others are living in 107 countries world-wide. In addition to Barcelona, there are official alumni chapters in Berlin, Bogota, Brussels, Lima, London, Madrid, Mexico City, New York, and Paris. Each chapter is led by one or more Alumni Regional Ambassadors, who volunteer to act as liaisons between local alumni communities and the BSE. Ambassadors who attended the Global Alumni Meeting met during the weekend to exchange ideas and share feedback with fellow ambassadors and BSE staff.
Chapter events, as well as events in many other cities such as Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, and Washington DC, are announced on the alumni platform, available to all BSE Master's students and alumni.
