La Caixa-Severo Ochoa International Doctoral Fellowships awarded to 5 PhD students

Five doctoral students have been awarded La Caixa-Severo Ochoa International Doctoral Fellowships to support their PhD studies in one of the two doctoral programs organized jointly with the Barcelona School of Economics: the Graduate Program in Economics, Finance and Management (GPEFM) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and theInternational Doctorate in Economic Analysis (IDEA) at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

The fellowships are financed by "La Caixa" Foundation and will provide the five students with funding over a four-year period.

The "La Caixa" Foundation supports doctoral fellowships at those institutions which have received the Severo Ochoa Excellence Accreditation. The Severo Ochoa Program was launched in 2011 by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to promote frontier research and distinguish those institutions that are defining the global scientific debate. The BSE is the only center in the social sciences that has received the Severo Ochoa accreditation.

The 2013 La Caixa-Severo Ochoa Fellows:

Federica Daniele (Italy) is a GPEFM student. The topic of her undergraduate thesis at LUISS Guido Carli university in Rome was "Labor Market Dynamics during the Great Recession."

Julia Faltermeier (Germany) is a GPEFM student. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Newnham College, University of Cambridge where her dissertation "Don't shoot the messenger? – The role of sovereign credit ratings in financial crisis" garnered the Adam Smith Dissertation Prize and Gladstone Memorial Prize.

Alexey Filatov (Russia) is a student in the IDEA program. Mr. Filatov comes to Economics with a background in medical physics, which he studied at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Ricardo Maertens (Peru) is a student in the GPEFM. He is the co-author of two articles: "Inflation Expectations Formation in the Presence of Policy Shifts and Structural Breaks," published in the Journal of Socio­-Economics in 2013 and "Does the Exchange Rate Pass­-Through into Prices Change when Inflation Targeting is Adopted? The Peruvian Case Study Between 1994 And 2007," published in Journal of Macroeconomics in 2012.

Tongbin Zhang (China) is an IDEA student. He has a Masters in Economics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, where he co-authored a paper with Bo Hu on "House Price Crash and Macroeconomic Crisis: A Hong Kong Case."
