BSE joins the Alliance of Severo Ochoa Centers and Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence

Last week, the 25 centers and 16 research units that are accredited with the Severo Ochoa and the María de Maeztu excellence distinctions, met to establish how they can promote excellence in scientific research.

The Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Alliance (SOMMa) officially held their first meeting on October 18. This alliance was established to promote Spanish science through the recognition of research efforts at the forefront of their fields, help them increase their impact and enhance international scientific leadership and competitiveness. Luis Serrano, Director of the Center for Genomic Regulation, is heading up the alliance over the next two years and Teresa Garcia-Milà, Director of the Barcelona School of Economics, is the vice-president.

The BSE received its second Severo Ochoa Research Excellence Distinction in 2016. The School will be an active member of the SOMMa alliance that aims to raise the national and international profile of science in Spain. This will be achieved by the centers and units working together to exchange knowledge, strengthen the R&D+i system and have a voice in Spanish and European science policy.

“The network will strengthen ties between the top research institutions in Spain,” Professor Garcia-Milà said. “It will provide a platform for sharing best scientific practices and reinforce the attraction and retention of internationally-recognized scientists. It will also support the transfer of knowledge from laboratories and lecture halls to the daily lives of the general public.”

The SOMMa centers and units will meet again in the second running of 100xCiencia on November 2-3, which will be focused on the transfer of knowledge generated in the centers and research units as well as facilitating society's appreciation of its value.
