BSE Data Science Center hosts BAYESCOMP 2018

research conference

This March, the BSE Data Science Center hosted Bayes Comp 2018 at Ciutadella Campus (UPF) in Barcelona.

Bayes Comp is a biennial conference sponsored by the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA) section of the same name. The conference and the section both aim to promote original research into computational methods for inference and decision making and to encourage the use of frontier computational tools among practitioners, the development of adapted software, languages, platforms, and dedicated machines, and to translate and disseminate methods developed in other disciplines among statisticians.

This year's edition is the first major international gathering of researchers on Bayesian computation, a key component of data science. The conference drew nearly 200 participants from top institutions around the world. Plenary speakers were:

"As the Director of the Data Science Center, and active researcher on this field, I think the meeting was a great success," said Omiros Papaspiliopoulos (ICREA-UPF and BSE). "Its program showcased the importance of this field across scientific disciplines, with sessions devoted to Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics and Astronomy, for example, as well as its fast developing pace, and the diversity of the people that work in it."

The Data Science Center is an initiative of the Barcelona School of Economics that coordinates and promotes interdisciplinary and methodological research, training, and knowledge transfer in Data Science. Bayes Comp is the second major conference hosted by the center. The first one was the Barcelona Data Science Meeting. Other activities coming up this year include workshops for professionals and academics, Summer School courses, and the BSE Summer Forum Workshop on High-dimensional Statistics and Random Structures.
