Course overview

Data-driven decision-making relies on three pillars: descriptive analytics to understand what has happened, predictive analytics to anticipate what will happen, and prescriptive analytics to determine what should be done. While advances in machine learning have made descriptive and predictive tools widely accessible, many analysts still face the crucial question: “Now what?” How to turn predictions into optimal, real-world actions?

This hands-on course bridges this gap and introduces prescriptive analytics: the discipline of using data, models and explicit objectives to make optimal decisions. The two main tools of prescriptive analytics explored in this course are mathematical optimisation and machine learning. Participants will learn to frame a real problem in terms of decision variables, objectives, constraints and uncertain inputs, translate that structure into a mathematical model, implement it in Python, and turn the solution into a recommendation that can be evaluated and implemented.

This course is centred on practical modelling cases spanning business, finance, public policy and regulation, healthcare, energy, and logistics. The classical workflow in these cases comprises two steps: first, predict uncertain data; second, use the predictions to make better decisions. However, predictions contain errors, and not all errors have the same impact: overestimating no-shows on a half-empty flight has no consequences, but on a full flight it results in overbooking, upset customers, and compensation for damages. Therefore, predictions cannot be made in isolation, but must be integrated into the decision-making process. To this end, we develop an integrated approach in which machine learning models are embedded into mathematical optimisation models.

The course starts from the foundations of optimisation and builds towards integrated prediction-to-decision pipelines. The emphasis is on rigorous modelling, uncovering managerial insights and trade-offs, and practical use.

Faculty

Who is this course for?

This course is for professionals and graduate students who work with data or own decisions informed by data, and want to move beyond reporting and forecasting.

It is particularly relevant to:

  • Data analysts, data scientists and machine-learning practitioners who want to connect forecasts, scores and models to concrete actions
  • Economists, finance and risk professionals, policy analysts, and regulators who make decisions under budget constraints, capacity limits, uncertainty, or competing objectives
  • Product, marketing, operations and strategy professionals who use data to prioritise interventions, allocate resources or design plans
  • Consultants, technical managers and domain specialists who want a rigorous framework for structuring decisions and working with analytics teams
  • Graduate students and researchers in economics, econometrics, finance, statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science and operational research

It is also well suited to professionals moving into data science or decision analytics who meet the prerequisites below.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive questions, and identify when mathematical optimisation is an appropriate tool
  • Frame a real decision problem in terms of decision variables, objectives, constraints, data and stakeholders
  • Formulate, implement and solve linear and mixed-integer optimisation models in Python
  • Use continuous, integer and binary variables to represent allocation, selection, assignment and logical decisions
  • Connect predictive models to optimisation models
  • Use sensitivity and scenario analysis to assess trade-offs and the effects of uncertain inputs and modelling assumptions
  • Compare predict-then-optimise pipelines with decision-focused learning, and distinguish predictive accuracy from downstream decision quality
  • Interpret the results and communicate a recommendation, along with its assumptions, trade-offs, and limitations

Key topics covered

Here is a course outline of what you will cover.

From Analytics to Decisions

Plus iconPlus icon
  • Distinguish descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive questions
  • Learn to identify the decisions that can be controlled, the outcomes to pursue, the constraints to respect, and the data needed to connect them
  • Discuss when optimisation is (and is not) the right tool

Mathematical Modelling in Python

Plus iconPlus icon
  • Translate plain-language problems into decision variables, objective functions and constraints, and then into executable Python models

Predictions as Inputs to Decisions

Plus iconPlus icon
  • Build workflows in which regression models (e.g., trees, neural networks) provide forecasts to inform allocation, planning, or policy decisions. Sensitivity and scenario analysis
  • Reveal how prediction errors, uncertain inputs, and modelling assumptions can change the recommended action

Decision-focused learning and end-to-end pipelines

Plus iconPlus icon
  • Improve the above workflows by training or evaluating predictive models to enhance downstream decision quality
  • The course concludes by integrating data, prediction, optimisation, evaluation, and communication into a small, integrated prototype
