Course Overview

Banking regulation and supervision are evolving as policymakers respond to new financial risks and changes in the financial system. While the framework developed after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis continues to be implemented and tested, the growth of non-bank financial institutions, digitalisation and AI, and emerging cyber, climate and geopolitical risks are creating new challenges for regulators.

This course examines why banks are regulated and how international and European frameworks operate in practice. Participants will explore the evolution of capital requirements from Basel I to Basel III, as well as bank resolution, deposit insurance and the role of international cooperation. The course also considers how regulation and supervision must adapt to non-bank financial intermediation, crypto-assets and technological change.

Taught by a leading expert with direct experience advising on financial regulation, supervision and risk assessment, the course connects regulatory principles with current policy debates. It equips participants with a clear understanding of the existing framework, its limitations and the challenges shaping the future of banking regulation.
