Specialize in banking regulations and get an overview of current issues and debates in the sector.
The banking system is an essential, but highly fragile part of modern economies. Since banking is intrinsically linked to money and the monetary system and therefore to the basic functioning of the economy, banks are regulated more extensively than any other sector. But digitalization is rapidly changing the picture. Cryptocurrencies and stablecoins threaten the monetary sovereignty of governments by offering private monies. Central banks are planning to offer their own digital currencies (CBDC).
The course provides an overview of the basic theory of banking and banking fragility, bank regulation from the microprudential to the macroprudential level and some recent developments in the economics of money and payments. At the end of the course, students should have a good understanding of the basic economics of banking fragility, regulation, and money, be able to assess the impact of regulatory reforms, and how to draw appropriate policy conclusions.
The course targets graduate students and young researchers at the level of at least a Masters degree, and policymakers and professionals interested in regulatory and prudential aspects of banking.
