Javier Ruiz

Former EU Competition Litigator and Former Partner at Latham & Watkins LLP

Javier Ruiz Calzado recently retired after a long career as a partner in one of the leading Law Firms in Antitrust & Competition Practice in the EU. 

A dedicated EU competition litigator, he has appeared in more than 60 cases before the European Courts in Luxembourg and has represented clients before the European Commission across a wide range of matters spanning merger control, cartels, abuse of dominance, and state aid. 

Before joining private practice, he served for six years as a law clerk (référendaire) to Judge García-Valdecasas at the Court of First Instance (now the General Court of the European Union), contributing to leading antitrust judgments including Airtours/First Choice and Bayer/Adalat. He holds a Master’s in EC Law from the College of Europe (1988) and a Law Degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (1987). He has lectured regularly on competition law procedure and litigation in several master’s programmes.
