Javier Perez is currently Director of the International Economics and Euro Area Department, within the DG Economics and Research of the Bank of Spain, and member of the International Relations Committee of the Eurosystem. Before, he has held other positions at the Bank of Spain: Director of the Economic Developments Department, Head of the Conjunctural Analysis Division, and Manager of the Public Sector and Fiscal Policy Unit. Before joining the Bank of Spain, he was Principal Economist at the DG Economics of the European Central Bank, Associate Professor at University Pablo de Olavide of Seville (Spain), Senior Research Office at the research foundation centrA (regional public administration), and Assistant Professor at University Complutense of Madrid. He has a Ph.D. in Economics (with distinction) from this latter University. He has been also a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Eurosystem.

Dr. Perez's fields of interest are in the broad area of macroeconomics (forecasting; textual analysis; computational economics; fiscal policies). In some of his most recent projects he uses large archives of newspaper articles and other non-standard data sources to nowcast economic developments and to construct measures of global economic risks (economic policy uncertainty indices; indicators of social tensions; awareness about extreme events, like pandemics), with a view to inform real-time policy-making. Even though his main interest is in policy analysis, he contributes regularly to academic journals (see a list of publications).
