PhD in Statistics, Bocconi University

Lorenzo Cappello is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and an Affiliated Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University, a visiting scholar, then a research associate in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at UT Austin.

His research aims to provide computationally tractable methods and scalable algorithms tailored to big data problems. Most of his projects are motivated by concrete questions arising in applications, in particular genetics, evolutionary biology, and epidemiology. Specific research interests include inference for the parameters of stochastic processes, the development of recursive algorithms for Bayesian computation, change-point detection, and applications to infectious diseases and ancient DNA.
