Labor Economics joins BSE summer school offer for 2010

The 2010 edition of the Barcelona Economics Summer Schools will include perennial favorites Banking, Microeconometrics, and Zvi Griliches Research Summer Schools, as well as one new program: the Barcelona Labor Economics Summer School. These short summer programs are addressed to researchers, professionals and graduate students who want to improve their competences in these specific fields of knowledge. As they have for the past three editions, summer school participants will learn cutting-edge techniques from leading academics and practictioners, network with colleagues from around the world, and enjoy a cosmopolitan Mediterranean setting.

New for 2010: Labor Economics Summer School and Microeconometrics Lab

The Labor Economics Summer School will cover both theoretical and empirical aspects of recent developments within macro-labor, micro-labor, and managerial-labor contexts. Because of this multi-faceted approach, practitioners and academics alike gain valuable perspectives on the course topics, which include: Determination of Wages, Incentives in Organizations, Labor Market Outcomes, and Topics in Personnel Economics. The director of the Labor Economics Summer School is Maia Güell (University of Edinburgh, UPF, and BSE). The faculty also includes Ghazala Azmat (UPF and BSE), Derek Neal and Robert Shimer (both from the University of Chicago).

The Microeconometrics Summer School returns this year with the new offer of a practical lab course to complement its four standard courses. In the lab, students will work with four tools for linear regressions which are frequently used in applied research. Each session will present an econometric problem, discuss its theoretical solution and illustrate its implementation in Stata using real world data. Any participant enrolled in at least one Microeconometrics course is eligible to enroll in the lab session, which has a special price of 125 euros (space is limited).

Build a customized summer experience

The success of last year's economics summer schools was due in part to the flexibility of the programs. As in the 2009 edition, the summer school schedule is designed to allow participants to tailor their own experience by mixing and matching courses from any of the Barcelona Economics Summer Schools. Several participants took advantage of this last year, building a program of courses from the Banking and Microeconometrics schools.

Students in the Zvi Griliches and Banking Summer Schools can personalize their experience even further by presenting their own research papers during the sessions. Banking co-director Xavier Freixas sees this as one of the advantages of the program.

"The course offers a unique opportunity to cover the main recent path-breaking results both in the theory and econometrics of banking, providing a deep understanding of the main issues in the area," he said. "The combination of the coursework with presentations of research from the participants themselves also makes the Banking Summer School a rich experience."

Moshe Kim, co-director of the Banking Summer School, recalled the paper topics presented last year. "Participants shared their work on Banking Regulation, Bank Lending Strategies, Market Discipline, the Survival of Financially Distressed Firms, Banking Fragility, Competition and Optimistic Advice of Financial Analysts, Liquidity Risk Premia in Unsecured Interbank Money Markets among other topics," he said. "Discussing the papers in the context of the theoretical and empirical topics we cover in the courses provides a valuable counterpoint and lets participants immediately apply what they are learning to their own work."
