BSE trains Competition Authority professionals
A new edition of the Barcelona School of Economics Intensive Course on Quantitative Methods for Competition Analysis took place from May 9-13, with both remote and in person participants. Leading academics and practitioners walked the students through the latest methods for analyzing competition cases.
An intensive aimed at acquiring empirical measurement methods
The five-day intensive aimed to provide participants with a deep understanding of recent empirical methods to measure market power and competition, tools to be applied to problems such as market definition, or the analysis of mergers and of damages from anticompetitive conduct. The program’s faculty included some of the leading academic economists in the area of industrial organization and competition policy, and practitioners with extensive experience on quantitative methods in competition cases:
- Daniel Coublucq (European Commission DG Competition)
- Frank Verboven (University of Leuven)
- Helena Perrone (University of Mannheim)
- Benoît Durand (RBB Economics)
- Gábor Koltay (European Commission DG Competition)
- Christian Michel (Charles Rivers Associates)
Participation from around the world
In this edition, over 30 students attended, with participants from 17 countries represented. Mai Nguyen-Ones (Norwegian Competition Authority), shared her impressions: “The course gave a detailed overview of empirical methods used in competition economics. As a former PhD research scholar and now working for the agency, I particularly enjoyed having the views on the topics from both the academic, the commission and the practitioner point of view. Further, the combination of lectures and practical sessions gave me a deeper understanding of the problems presented.”
To date, close to 300 institutions from around the world have sent participants to BSE professional courses, whose participant number allows students for close contact with the faculty. Common student profiles include lawyers, economists, policy makers, consultants and managers, many at a senior level. Among the participant’s employers in this course are:
