The Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) was founded in 2006 by Andreu Mas-Colell as an institution for scientific cooperation between four academic units: two university departments and two research centers with a long tradition of collaboration and a history of leadership in the field of Economics.
The BSE Academic Units
Together, we are working to make Barcelona a world reference in Economics education and research.
Frontier Knowledge for an Evolving World
Mission
BSE aims to promote the creation and transmission of frontier knowledge in Economics and related disciplines, by consolidating Barcelona as a world-class center of research, academic education, and professional training with the ultimate goals of informing policy and promoting economic and social wellbeing.
Vision
The world economy is in a state of constant evolution. Classical models are being questioned, and we face problems that require new approaches. In such a situation, and in a society that is urgently seeking solutions, solid economic knowledge and research are crucial. The world requires people with a well-rounded education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, global outlook, and cultural awareness.
Values
BSE’s core values are Rigor, Relevance, Collaboration, Openness, and Belonging.
This group of more than 30 leading academics, including several Nobel Laureates in Economics, provides strategic guidance and works with BSE to ensure the quality and performance of our academic programs and research activities.
Key to BSE’s mission are the talent, enthusiasm, and drive of BSE’s teaching faculty and research community.
“The core of the Barcelona School of Economics is composed of world-class economists who could be in any other center of Economics in the world, but have chosen Catalonia, specifically Barcelona, as their base.”
Robert Solow (1924-2023) Nobel Laureate and BSE Scientific Council Member
The Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) continues the mission established by our founders in 2006.
From our inception until 2021, we were known as the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE). This period was defined by the consolidation of our world-ranking research community, the development of our Master’s programs and continuing education offer, and recognition as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence.
In 2021, we shortened our brand name to the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). This strategic decision was made to align BSE with leading Economics schools around the world and to better encompass our educational offerings, which extend beyond standard graduate training and promote lifelong learning for both academics and professionals.
The name “Barcelona GSE” still appears on our website and in some official contexts for fiscal and legal purposes.
While BSE’s name has evolved, our commitment to academic rigor and research excellence remains unwavering.
