Carles is an independent researcher who began his teaching career at the University of Edinburgh, later moving to Ca’ Foscari (Venice) before settling in Barcelona.
Carles’ latest area of expertise is AI Ethics, with a focus on the philosophical questions that arise at the intersection of AI, human behavior, politics, and the impact of the digital business model on the well-being of democracies and the individual. In addition, Carles applies his background on literature, narrative theories and philosophy of language to evaluate the ethical tensions of NLP and LLM’s. Lastly, Carles integrates his background in ethical frameworks and political philosophy into the study of algorithmic fairness and justice. In sum, he approaches AI ethics with a techno-humanist mindset: an orientation that seeks to understand AI through complementary perspectives or academic fields. Believing in the power of cinema and art to convey complex ideas, Carles uses them to help students challenge assumptions, develop ethical decision-making skills, and, above all, expand their philosophical perspective.
Carles is currently teaching Master’s and Executive courses on AI Ethics at several business schools, including ESADE, Barcelona School of Management as well as courses on the ethics of AI regulations and lawmaking at Universitat de Barcelona.
