Juan A. Rodríguez-Aguilar is a Research Professor (Full Professor) at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (IIIA-CSIC).
His research focuses on multiagent systems, multiagent reinforcement learning, and the foundations of generative and responsible AI—encompassing ethics, safety, and explainability—as well as on the application of AI for the social good. He has published more than 250 articles in journals, peer-reviewed conferences, and books, and regularly publishes in leading AI conferences and journals. His work has resulted in technology for the social good in several domains: (1) Education, through the Eduteams app, which facilitates teamwork in the educational community and currently serves more than 50,000 users (more than 2,000 educators and 40,000 students); (2) Mobility, via a ridesharing simulator to help policymakers assess the benefits of shared mobility; (3) Participatory budgeting, through a long-term collaboration with the City of Barcelona to improve the Decidim citizen platform; and (4) Cultural heritage, through the first virtual reality serious game and recreation of La Draga, one of Europe’s most important Neolithic settlements.
In 2013, he was elected Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence; in 2024, he became a board member of the International Foundation of Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems; and in 2025, a member of ELLIS, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems.
From 2024 he represents the Spanish Ministry of Digital Transformation in the OECD Expert Group on AI in the Labour Market, and from 2025, he represents the CSIC in the EU Science Europe association as an expert on AI. Furthermore, he regularly acts as an expert for various international research funding agencies, including the European Commission.
He co-founded iSOCO SA, together with fellow PhD students, an AI company that became the first spin-off of the CSIC. He was responsible for developing new products and services, with his main contribution being the development of strategic sourcing applications to facilitate negotiations between companies.
