Professor Teresa Garcia-Milà (UPF and BSE) has been appointed the new Director-General of the Barcelona School of Economics by the School’s Board of Trustees. Prof. Garcia-Milà, an economist with successful experience in higher education management and in the private sector, will take the post on December 1, 2012.

The outgoing Director-General, Dr. Eduard Vallory, has stepped down voluntarily in order to pursue new professional projects and to foster a new direction for the School, led by an economist-scholar. He will start a sabbatical in January 2013 as a Visiting Scholar at the Sociology Department of New York University (NYU).

The Board of Trustees has stressed the suitability of the appointed Director-General to lead the next stage of development of the BSE. "Professor Garcia-Milà has been a key team player in the development of the School, in her different positions, and now she will be able to fully contribute to lead it," said Prof. Ramon Marimon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Likewise, the Board expressed its acknowledgement of the work developed by Dr. Vallory since the inception of the School in 2006, and has shown its gratitude for his dedication and for the various achievements of the BSE under his leadership.

Professor Garcia-Milà holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota, where the now Nobel laureate Prof. Christopher Sims was her PhD supervisor and Prof. Thomas Sargent was a member of her thesis committee. An expert in macroeconomics, public economics, and regional economics, she has been BSE Affiliated Professor since the School’s foundation and has published articles in Economic Journal, The Review of Economics and Statistics, and Regional Science and Urban Economics.

The choice of Prof. Garcia-Milà as the new Director-General of the BSE strengthens its involvement with the academic institutions that compose the School and stresses its ties with the wider private-public partnership that supports it.

Over the years, Prof. Garcia-Milà has held academic management positions at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). She currently chairs the Department of Economics and Business (since 2011), was Vice-rector of Scientific Policy (2009-11), and was Dean of Undergraduate Studies in Economics (1995-2000). She has also been a Member of the BSE Academic Programs Committee since 2008.

As a scholar, Prof. Garcia-Milà is Professor at UPF, an institution she joined in 1990, and also Associate Researcher of the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI). Earlier in her academic career, she was Associate Professor in the Economics Department at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Associate Researcher at the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE), and previously Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University - The State University of New York (SUNY).

Professor Garcia-Milà also has leadership experience in the private sector as a member of the boards of Banc Sabadell, Enagás, and Vueling; social involvement as member of the Directory Board of the Cercle d’Economia association; as well as public sector advisory roles with public administrations at different levels. Some of these private and public institutions are supporting the BSE.
