Major firms grant research funds to BSE Data Science Center

BSE Data Science Center receives research funding from BBVA Foundation and Google

This spring, researchers at the BSE Data Science Center have been awarded multi-year research grants by BBVA Foundation and by Google. Obtaining competitive funding from these major private organizations makes it possible for the Data Science Center to continue producing frontier research and contribute to the international debate on topics in Data Science.

BBVA Foundation Big Data Research Team Grant

A research team at the BSE Data Science Center has received a grant from the BBVA Foundation's call on Big Data. Their project, "High-dimensional problems in structured probabilistic models," was among five projects selected out of 141 applications. The BBVA Foundation will support this project with 100,000€ for two years.

Professor Gábor Lugosi (ICREA-UPF and BSE) will be the principal investigator on the project. The researchers on the team will include: Eulàlia Nualart (UPF and BSE), Omiros Papaspiliopoulos (ICREA-UPF and BSE), David Rossell (UPF and BSE), and Piotr Zwiernik (UPF and BSE).

Google Faculty Research Award

The Google Faculty Research Awards fund world-class technical research in Computer Science, Engineering, and related fields. These competitive awards provide unrestricted gifts as support for research at institutions around the world. Only 15% of applicants receive funding, and each proposal goes through a rigorous Google-wide review process.

The award has been granted to Prof. Lugosi for his project, "Algorithms and Learning for AI." Google will provide $150,000 for three years to support this project.

About the BSE Data Science Center

In 2016, The Barcelona School of Economics launched the BSE Data Science Center to boost a wide range of activities in this scientific area and consolidate its role as the academic point of reference related to this emerging field.

The Data Science Center brings together many highly talented people: established and up-and-coming researchers, industry leaders and active professionals, and graduate students. The Center coordinates, disseminates, promotes and sponsors research in Data Science carried out by its members. Other Data Science activities include the BSE Master's Degree in Data Science (the first of its kind in Europe); a popular Data Science Summer School program; workshops and executive training; and consulting projects in collaboration with major research and industrial partners.

The Director of the BSE Data Science Center is Prof. Omiros Papaspiliopoulos, an international expert in Statistics. The Center has three Area Directors: Dr. David Rossell, an international expert in Statistics and Bioinformatics, Dr. Alex Karatzoglou, an international expert in Machine Learning, and Dr. Stephen Hansen, a pioneer in the use of Machine Learning within Economics.
