The conference was held to celebrate the 145th issue of the journal Spanish Economics Papers that focuses on "Regulation and Policy Challenges for Competition in Spain."

On September 22, 2015, the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) hosted an academic conference to celebrate the presentation of the 145th issue of the journal, Papeles de economía española (Spanish Economics Papers). The journal is published by the Foundation of Savings Banks (FUNCAS), which co-organized the conference with the BSE and Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The conference was chaired by the Director of the BSE, Teresa Garcia-Mila, followed by a presentation on “Regulation and Competition in Spain” by Carlos Ocaña, Director of FUNCAS. The event closed with a presentation by Mr. José María Marín Quemada, President of the Spanish Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC).

The latest issue of Spanish Economics Papers explores the problems that Spanish regulators face and offer diagnoses of the level of competition in strategic markets such as food distribution and telecommunications.

The conference focused on the first block of articles in the journal, dedicated to institutional design and coordinated by Professor Juan-José Ganuza (UPF and BSE). In addition to his research activities, Professor Ganuza directs and teaches in the BSE Master’s Program in Competition and Market Regulation.

One of the articles in this section of the journal is an analysis of the design of the CNMC by Juan Delgado and Héctor Otero. Mr. Otero is a graduate of one of the first cohorts of Competition master's students at the BSE. He is currently an Economist with Global Economics Group, a consulting firm in Madrid.

A second section of the journal is devoted to the interaction between law and the economy in competition policy.
