Barcelona School of Economics Emeritus Research Professor Robin Hogarth (ICREA-UPF and BSE) has passed away at the age of 81.
Professor Hogarth earned his PhD at the University of Chicago. He went on to positions at INSEAD in France and the London Business School before returning to Chicago, where he was a member of the faculty for over 20 years. Later on, he moved to Barcelona and joined Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) as an ICREA Research Fellow. He was one of the first members of the BSE research community and a BSE Research Professor until his retirement.
Professor Hogarth was a leading expert in the psychology of judgment and decision making. He published several books on the subject, including The Myth of Experience: Why We Learn the Wrong Lessons and Ways to Correct Them, co-authored with Emre Soyer (New York. PublicAffairs, 2020). In 2023, he was the inaugural recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Association for Decision Making (EADM), an interdisciplinary organization devoted to the study of normative, descriptive and prescriptive theories of decision making.
In this early BSE Research Spotlight Video, Professor Hogarth explains how he uses a novel methodology to demonstrate that even relatively simple measures of mood state can have a significant effect on perception of risk:
Hogarth combined a robust research career with teaching and advising students in the UPF PhD Program in Economics, Finance, and Management (organized jointly with BSE), which he also directed from 2010-2018. "I have the joy of interacting with talented PhD students from all over the world," he said on his webpage.
The BSE community has had the joy of knowing and learning from Professor Hogarth. He will be greatly missed.
