Through the Women for Africa Foundation's "Science by Women" Program, the Barcelona School of Economics is pleased to host visiting researcher, Prof. Erika Kraemer-Mbula during the 2019-20 academic year.

Currently based in South Africa, Erika Kraemer-Mbula was trained as an economist at the University of Cantabria and got her PhD in Development Studies from the University of Oxford. She is currently a Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg and a researcher at the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (SciSTIP).

At the BSE, her research focuses on transformative innovation, the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) and sustainable development in Africa. Professor Kraemer-Mbula has the ambition to develop a new theoretical framework to understand transformative innovation in the context of 4IR and from an African perspective. This is based on an interest to unpack the social and technological relationships that explain the rate, direction and patterns of (radical) innovation adoption, diffusion and use. She is a member of the Cotec network of experts.

About the "Science by Women" program

The goal of the FMxA's Science by Women Program is to enable African women researchers to play a leading role in the transition of Africa to a knowledge-based and innovation-led economy through research that can be transferred into products, processes, services and technologies having impact on people´s lives.

The BSE established a collaboration agreement with the Women for Africa Foundation in 2015, pledging to work with the organization to leverage economic research via activities designed specifically for African women.
