New members and appointments in the BSE research community
During the first few months of 2024, the Barcelona School of Economics has welcomed three BSE Affiliated Professors:
- Chiara Amorino (UPF and BSE)
- Paula Bustos (ICREA-UPF and BSE)
- Mikhail Drugov (UAB and BSE)
Affiliated Professors are members of BSE’s four academic units who agree to join BSE and participate in our project to make Barcelona one of the best places in the world to conduct research, study, and share knowledge about Economics and related fields such as Data Science and Finance.
New members, familiar faces
Chiara Amorino (PhD in Applied Mathematics, Université Paris-Saclay) joined the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) earlier this year. She conducts research on statistical inference for stochastic differential equations.
Paula Bustos (PhD, Harvard University) returns to the BSE research community, now as an ICREA Research Professor at UPF. In the past, she had been a researcher at the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI), another BSE academic unit.
Professor Bustos focuses her research on International Trade and Development Economics. Her current project, “Adaptation to Climate Change in Developing Countries,” is funded by a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant.
Mikhail Drugov (PhD, Toulouse School of Economics) is a new member of the Department of Economics and Economic History at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where he has been a visiting researcher since last fall.
Professor Drugov’s research interests include Information Economics, Industrial Organization, Organizational Economics, Corruption, Contest Theory, and Experiments.
BSE Associate Research Professor appointments
In addition to becoming an Affiliated Professor of BSE, Professor Drugov is one of three members of the BSE research community who have been named BSE Associate Research Professors. These appointments come from the BSE Board of Trustees and are funded by BSE’s research endowment.
The two other members of the BSE research community who have been appointed are:
- Rosa Ferrer (UPF and BSE)
- Andre Groeger (UAB and BSE)
Rosa Ferrer (PhD, Vanderbilt University) is an Associate Professor at UPF. Her primary research fields are Law and Economics, and Industrial Organization. Her current research mainly focuses on consumer regulation and gender differences among high-skilled individuals.
Professor Ferrer combines her research activities with her role as Director of the BSE Master's Program in Competition, Regulation, and Markets, as well as teaching in the Master’s and Executive Education courses.
Andre Groeger (PhD, Goethe University Frankfurt) is an Associate Professor at UAB. His research agenda includes a range of interdisciplinary topics between the fields of Development, Environmental, and Labor Economics as well as the Economics of Migration.
Professor Groeger’s current work, “Rural Structural Transformation in Developing Countries," is funded by an ERC Starting Grant. Like Professor Ferrer, Professor Groeger is a talented researcher who also teaches courses in the BSE Master’s programs.
What the BSE research community is achieving together
The Barcelona School of Economics is consistently ranked among the world’s top research institutions in Economics (1st in Spain, 3rd in Europe, and 9th in the world according to RePec rankings as of March 2024).
Since 2012, BSE has been distinguished as one of Spain’s Severo Ochoa Centers of Research Excellence, an honor bestowed on a select few institutions across all fields of scientific investigation “that are defining the global scientific debate.”
This debate comes alive every year at the BSE Summer Forum, which has become an international meeting point for hundreds of economists to workshop their latest papers with colleagues who share their specific research interests.
BSE’s achievements and activities are possible thanks to the more than 150 members of the BSE research community. These are the people who are asking new questions, developing creative approaches, and continuously pushing the frontier of knowledge forward and in new directions.
It’s an exciting time to be part of the Barcelona School of Economics. We look forward to formally welcoming our new members at the next community-wide “Trobada” (Catalan for “gathering”), which will take place next October.
